Awhile back, I picked up some wood shims from Lowe’s with plans to make some makeshift pallet artwork out of them. Thankfully, I finally found the time to create my wood shim art and wanted to share it with you! DSC 6780withlabel Guest Post: Pallet Art from Wood Shims from Just Us Four

Guest Post: DIY Hair Accessories from Endlessly Inspired

Hi! I’m Jenn, from Endlessly Inspired. Endlessly Inspired is a fun, laid-back place where I share quick, easy, inexpensive, and fun tips, ideas and projects — including crafts, decorating, cooking, baking, and more — that women and their kids can do around the house. My blog is still pretty new, so I’m so grateful to Sarah for letting me do a guest post here! Today I’m going to share with you a super quick and easy way to turn a silk flower into a hair accessory or other embellishment.

I used to have a business called DCBaby Gifts & Accessories, where I made and sold hair accessories and other gifts. When I would scope out the competition at shows, it always amazed and horrified me when I saw someone selling hair flowers that still had the green plastic thing in the middle. No. Just not acceptable, people. Come on. So I’m here today to show you how easy it is to make beautiful hair flowers from craft-store (or even Dollar Store!) flowers. It pretty much could not be easier, and the possibilities are endless. Here’s what you need:

Silk flowers Glue (I use hot glue, but you could also use Fabric-Tac, Tacky Glue or something similar. Embellishment for middle (more on that later) Small felt circle Alligator clip or other back (I used a ribbon-covered alligator clip, but you could use a pin back, a plain alligator clip, headband or something similar — or you could just glue it right onto whatever you are embellishing!)   Here’s what you do:

Flip the flower over and remove the green plastic thingy (that’s a technical term) from the back. It should just slide right off.

This is what it will look like.

Remove the little tube thingy (another technical term) from the flower, which will leave you with a stack of petals.

Separate the petals out and take a look. Most flowers like this one will have both large and small petals. The smaller petals are placed between the larger ones to make the flower a bit fuller. You can see that some of my smaller petals are a bit wonky (i.e., that bad boy on the bottom in the middle). No worries, we’ll just stick the funky-looking ones in between the bigger ones and no one will ever know. Pick out the best looking small and large petal and put those aside so you can use those ones on the top.

Now just start stacking up and gluing your petals together! You probably want to start with the worst-looking ones on the bottom, because no one will see those.

You can see that this small petal was originally the one on top, because it has a bit of glue on it. That probably would have gotten covered up by the center embellishment we’ll put on in a minute, but just to be safe, I moved this petal farther down in the stack.

Your top layer will have two small petals stacked on top of each other.

Once all your petals are stacked up and glued together, glue your embellishment in the center. For this flower, I used a flower cabochon that I got on Etsy, but you can use whatever you want: buttons (just remove the shank from the back; I use this handy-dandy little doohickey), earrings (check out thrift shops and garage sales for some cool vintage ones), fabric-covered buttons, and rhinestones are just a few suggestions — you can see some examples at the end of this tutorial.

Finally, flip your flower over and glue a small felt circle to the back to cover up the hole. (This step is optional, but I’m fussy and I think it makes it look prettier and more finished.) Then glue your alligator clip on, and you’re done!

Here are a few other examples of flowers I’ve made in the past:

(If you want to get super fancy, you can add in some marabou or ostrich feathers too! Just glue these in on top of your bottom layer of petals.)

Now, because I have three boys, I don’t get a ton of use out of hair flowers, so I used mine on a wreath instead. I just wrapped a straw wreath form with burlap and slid the alligator clips right in. Easy, peasy!

Thanks again to Sarah for letting me guest post today, and come check out more at Endlessly Inspired!

So happy to have you Jenn, I love how your flower clips look in your burlap wreath!

DIY Artificial Flowers

Artificial flowers have sure come a long way.  Whenever I visit Michael’s I drool over the beautiful selection. I cannot seem to justify the price of them though…I mean, honestly…$20-$30 for artificial flowers? Yeah, right.

So for a measly $1.50 and a branch from my yard I created a realistic looking artificial flower that looks just as great as those over priced ones at Michael’s.

Here are the supplies you will need.

1 Branch

Glue Gun & Hot Glue Sticks

1 Package of Petals from the Dollar Store or WalMart

In my craft supply I had a jar of decorative sand and a few glass pebbles. I placed these in this cute vase then inserted my branch – a perfect way to keep it upright and stable.

You can glue as many or as few petals as you like.

I just put a dab of hot glue near the base of the petal and folded it on the tip of the branch until the glue was dry.

Since this such an affordable project you could make a few of these in different colors.

I’m so happy you came for a visit, thanks so much!
