Alderberry Hill – Curb Appeal & My Garden

So I’ve been a little absent lately…well perhaps a lot absent. Ahhh…summer’s here and I have so many other things going on that working my day job is the only thing that I can fit in – and that’s because I have to. Blogging has taken a backseat to everything else since the weather has gotten warmer, the flowers are blooming and evenings are spent outside by the fire and watering my garden.

Speaking of gardens…want to see mine?

Here are some shots of the beautiful flowers in my garden…

And the curb appeal I’ve been working on for the past number of years….

I tend to change up the colors every year. My adirondack chairs have been painted every color of the rainbow – but I’m definitely loving the FIRE ENGINE RED this year – and that’s the paint color in case you’re wondering (from Tremclad).

Stick with me everyone…our summers are so short, I just can’t miss out but my mind is still full of ideas and projects that I want to share with you…just a little later…

Make the Scene Monday will be live tomorrow evening…I’m looking forward to see everything I’ve been missing!

Hi everyone!

Today I am sharing my Book Page Christmas Tree Tutorial with you.

I love these, they are classy yet rustic at the same time.

These are the supplies I used.

2 Square Glass Jars with lids

Spanish Moss

Skewers

Wooden balls for the top (optional)

An unused book

Paper cutter or scissors

I cut my paper into squares ranging from 3”x3” down to 1/2”x1/2”. Based on the size of your base your paper sizes may vary.

Fill your jar with spanish moss, this helps keep the skewer stabilized.

My lids were metal and I needed a hole in the top. I used a counter sink tool (I think that’s what it is called) Apparently you can get different ones, the one I used had a pointy tip so after placing it in the center of the lid and hitting it with the hammer several (I mean several) times, it finally punctured a hole.

Push the skewer down through the hole, into the spanish moss, flat end first.

Using the pointy top of the skewer, puncture then slide on your paper pieces starting with the largest. Put a few of your largest size on, and then work your way through your sizes, a few at a time until you reach the top. Then finish off by adding a little wooden ball to the top – or how about a paper star or a bow!

They turned out wonderful, don`t you think?

And it really doesn’t matter what kind of book you use, this book is an old book on water and waste water technology!

I don’t think anyone will try to read the little squares!

So chic, I’m in love!

Halloween Decor

Halloween Decor 2012

at  Alderberry Hill

This year I have added turquoise to my Halloween decor, just a touch of the famous blue goes a long way. And it mixes so well with orange but I thought I’d use red in this display along with silver for a modern Halloween feel!

I picked up the Halloween Tree at Michaels and decided on simple bats cut with my Silhouette Machine as decoration for the tree.

I coated them with Mod Podge and sprinkled red, silver & turquoise glitter on them and adhered them to the tree with double sided tape.

I didn’t have any real old fashioned keys so I made a set!

I cut them out with my Silhouette and covered them in glitter too!

Remember the Halloween Glass Blocks I made a couple of weeks back? Well, I was left with a stencil that I used to create this wooden sign. I cut a piece of pine down to size and sanded the edges.

Then…

1. Paint white/cream and let dry

2. Adhere your stencil to the wood (my vinyl was adhesive so I stuck right on, but you can use spray adhesive on your stencil too)

3. Paint your letters black

4. Distress with a little black paint

I am in love, it turned out so good!

I picked up this cute frame from Goodwill, it wasn’t always turquoise & there was a terrible canvas print in the frame with no glass. So I spray painted the entire thing, canvas and all and added the sweet “Happy Halloween” which I cut with my Silhouette Machine.

I made the Halloween wreath using cupcake liners last year. You can view the tutorial here.

I added in my Glitzy Halloween Coffin, tutorial here.

And a Halloween Printable, found here.

This little bird house was hanging out in storage so I spooked it up with a little turquoise, silver & black paint and gave it some height by placing it on a candle stick holder.

And the look is complete!

This little nook is in my craft room, I’m all ready for Halloween!

When witches go riding,

and black cats are seen,

the moon laughs and whispers,

‘tis near Halloween.
