Guest Post: Nutella Biscoff White Chocolate Cookies from Little Accidents in the Kitchen

Hello! I’m Joey from Little Accidents in the Kitchen. I really love Sarah’s interesting creations and have been following her for some time, so I’m really really excited to be guest posting here today!

What I have for you today are some cookies. Really, who doesn’t love these little bites of heaven? But these aren’t just any cookies. They’re chock full of amazing stuff.

Like biscoff.

Like nutella.

Like white chocolate.

The kind of stuff that I would spoon out of a jar. Or in the case of white chocolate, eat by the handful. Don’t deny that you do it too.

They’re already so good on their own. So what about when they’re packed into a soft, thick, chewy cookie? I don’t think I need to elaborate because you already know.

Make sure you have a crowd around when you bake these, so that you won’t lose self control and finish the whole tray. Well, that’s what I’m supposed to tell you, but here’s a little secret…

I kept the whole tray for myself

Ingredients:
160g plain flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/8 tsp salt

113g butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 brown sugar
1/4 cup speculoos/biscoff spread (or any cookie butter similiar in taste)
1/4 cup nutella

1 egg

1 cup white chocolate chips, divided

Method:
1. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together.

2. Cream butter till smooth. Add sugars and cream till creamy and fluffy. Beat in speculoos and nutella until smooth.

3. Add the egg and beat till smooth.

4. Add flour gradually and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.

5. Stir in 3/4 cup of the white chocolate chips.

5. Scoop about a tablespoon of batter for each cookie onto a baking sheet. Then dot each mound of dough with 3-4 white chocolate chips.

6. Bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 10-11 minutes. The cookies will be very soft, but will firm up slightly upon cooling.

7. Let cool on the tray for about 2 minutes, or till firm enough to handle. Then transfer carefully onto a wire rack to cool completely, or till cool enough to eat.

Guest Post: Antique Dresser Refinish from Denise…On a Whim

Hi everyone! I’m Denise from Denise… on a whim.

My most important job is being mom to two little cuties! I’m also a graphic designer at my real job, the Treasurer for the Kent County Youth Fair at my volunteer job, and painter/blogger/sometime-creative-genius at my most fun job, On a Whim. My boyfriend, Eric, and I love creating fun upcycled projects and refinishing furniture. We’ve been taking our unique pieces to crafts shows for a little over a year now and recently rented a permanent space in a new store here in Michigan.

I am so excited to be guest posting at the wonderful Alderberry Hill today!

This is my very first guest post, so I certainly hope you enjoy our project.

I think I picked a beauty to share with you!

My friend Karlye texted me a few weeks ago and asked if I would redo a dresser.

Of course, I said yes!

But then she came over with this gorgeous antique beauty.

Wow was about all I could think!

How lucky was I to get to work on this?!?

For this piece, I wanted to do something just a little masculine.

The chest of drawers, without the mirror attached, just seemed to call for it.

And the piece was originally going to be a surprise gift for Karlye’s Dad.

So masculine certainly seemed to fit the bill.

She and I both knew we wanted to stain some of it.

The wood itself was a little too gorgeous to cover up!

But, since it was such a wonderful piece, I also wanted to give it a little umph!

Something more than just stain.

I immediately though of ASCP Coco.

I love it when used with dark aging wax.

So I sanded down the trim on all four sides in order to restain those areas.

This piece also had peeling and warped veneer on the top that I decided to take off. I could tell the wood underneath the veneer would look great with some dark stain. So I set to work.

Thankfully, it came off fairly easily.

Sometimes that’s a super difficult job and absolutely no fun at all!

Here’s the chest sanded and restained.

I did not sand the inset areas or the drawer fronts, as I knew I would be using chalk paint there anyway.

Here’s a picture of the Coco on those insets.

No wax yet…

And same with the drawers. Just paint, no wax…

Love that it has the keyhole too!

I chose Minwax stain in Jacobean because it’s really pretty dark and I wanted dark for this piece.

Once I had the body done, I got out the mirror.

I sanded the base for that and restained it.

Then I painted the mirror frame in Coco.

I’m loving how it turned out!

Somewhere along the line, Karlye’s Dad found out about the project and he told Karlye that she could keep the Chest of Drawers.

Lucky girl!

Once I found that out, I knew I wanted to do something a little feminine with the drawer knobs.

I decided to make a trip to Hobby Lobby to look at their awesome selection of knobs and pulls.

I saw these and knew they would be perfect.

The white gives the piece just a little pop of color and yet coordinates so nicely with the Coco and dark stain.

And the dark chocolate swirls are just the perfect feminine touch for this piece!

I also bought this little birdie candleholder when I was there.

It’s so delicate and my favorite color.

I just couldn’t resist!

I think this piece turned out just how I had envisioned…

masculine with a soft side.

Hi! I’m Cathy, from A Peek Into My Paradise. I am super excited to be writing my first guest post for Sarah today! Thank you Sarah for having me!

I little about me. I have been married to my husband Dave for 29 years. We have two grown children, 26 and 22. We recently joined the empty nest club. I am a Christian who loves to read, spoil my two Shih Tzu’s, cook – bake – make anything with food, travel (we are HUGE Disney fans) and I have been known to flash people! I have been saving memories for years through photography and scrapbooking. Through the years friends and family would ask me, “How did you do that?” or “Can I have the recipe?”. Let’s get on to today’s post. I am super excited to share one of my favorite cookie recipes for Lemonhead Cookies.

I love lemon! As a matter of fact, one of my hubby’s favorite stories to share is the time I made lemon chicken for dinner the first year we were married. I didn’t think the amount of lemon juice the recipe called for was enough. So, I added more lemon..and a bit more…and it still didn’t look like enough.

Dinner was served, and with his eyes watering he made it through a few a few bites of lemon chicken. The lemon was SO strong he tells the tale, “I puckered for a week”! It wasn’t THAT bad.

Ok, it was strong, but lemony!

As I said, I love lemon! OMG! Amazing!

Wakes up your taste buds!

One of my favorites is lemon bars. So when I saw this recipe on

Pinterest I knew I had to try it soon. I was just waiting for an

event. I knew if I just made these for home

I would risk eating them ALL!

Thank you to the author of Blissful Roots blog for sharing Lemonhead Cookies with the world! Lemonhead cookies have the soft inside with a slightly crispy outside and bits of lemony heaven in every bite with Lemonhead pieces.

“They taste so fresh” – My Cousin

If you love lemon – you have to try these!

Cookie Ingredients:

1 lemon Cake mix

2 eggs

1 Tbsp. water

1/2 C. Oil

1/2 C. flour

1/2 C. crushed Lemonheads

(I bought a movie concession stand style box at Walmart for $1)

Powdered Sugar to roll the cookies in

Glaze Ingredients:

1 1/2 C. powdered sugar

3 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice

1 Tbsp. fresh lemon zest

I started with crushing the Lemonheads;

a handful at a time.

About half of the bowl would

be Lemonhead dust while the remainder was small bits.

This is a LOUD process; you don’t want to

crush the candies while the baby is sleeping!

Mix all cookie ingredients together;

except the powdered sugar.

Make into balls. I used a cookie scoop so the

cookies were all the same size.

I went ahead and rolled all the balls at one

time. I figured my hands were “cookie doughed”

dirty, so I rolled them first.

Then I rolled the cookie ball in powdered

sugar and placed them on silicone baking sheet

that lays on top of my stoneware.

Bake at 375 degrees for 7 to 9 minutes. I found 11-13

minutes in my oven. Check the first batch to find the

temperature for your oven. The cookie should just look done

but not brown.

REMOVE THEM AS QUICKLY AS

POSSIBLE FROM THE COOKING SHEET

The candies in the cookies melt and will stick!

While the first batch baked I made the glaze.

Super simple and basic glaze but the perfect topper

for a perfect cookie!

I mixed the ingredients in a measuring cup to

make it easy to drizzle the glaze on the cooled cookies.

Mix Glaze Ingredients:

1 1/2 C. powdered sugar

3 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice

1 Tbsp. fresh lemon zest

When you first mix the glaze it may seem thin.

The glaze will thicken after it sits for a few minutes.

When Cooled, drizzle with glaze.

Put them on a plate and watch them disappear!

We had leftovers from our family get together -

but NOT Lemonhead Cookies…

THEY WERE GONE!

Guest Post: Lemon Blueberry Breakfast Cake from Domestic Superhero

Hi, I’m Allyson from Domestic Superhero and I am super excited to be writing a guest post for Sarah today! When I started blogging just over a year ago, Alderberry Hill was one of the first blogs I fell in love with, and I have been following her ever since. Over at my blog, Domestic Superhero, I tackle everything from DIY Projects (check out my DIY Ottoman made from a pallet!) to cooking, and a bit of everything in between. Come check it out for some great recipes and projects! Moving on to today’s post, I am super excited to share this recipe for Lemon Blueberry Breakfast Cake. A few years ago we were hosting our first big Christmas breakfast, and all my in-laws were planning to come over. It was going to be my son’s second Christmas (but he was only a few weeks old at his first Christmas, so this one felt like a bigger deal), and I wanted to cook something that would win everyone over. Luckily I stumbled across Alexandra’s Kitchen, and found a delicious recipe that I thought would be perfect for the occasion. Of course everyone loved it, and I have baked the Lemon Blueberry Breakfast Cake on several other occasions, and it’s always a big hit! Make sure you double the recipe if you are having several people, and I bet you there will not be any leftovers!

Lemon Blueberry Breakfast Cake

Serves 6-8

Ingredients: ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature

Zest from 1 large lemon

3/4 cup + 3 tablespoons (set 1 TBS aside for sprinkling on top)

1 egg, room temperature

1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups flour (set aside 1/4 cup of this to toss w/blueberries)

2 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. kosher salt 2 cups fresh blueberries

½ cup buttermilk

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Cream butter with lemon zest and the sugar (keep 1TBS separate) until light and fluffy.

2. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until combined. Meanwhile, toss the blueberries with ¼ cup of flour, then whisk together the remaining flour, baking powder and salt.

3. Add the flour mixture to the batter a little at a time, alternating with the buttermilk. Fold in the blueberries.

4. Grease a 9-inch square baking pan (or something similar) with butter or coat with non-stick spray. Spread batter into pan. Sprinkle batter with remaining tablespoon of sugar. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes. Check with a toothpick for doneness. If necessary, return pan to oven for a couple of more minutes.

(Note: Baking for as long as 10 minutes more might be necessary.) Let cool at least 15 minutes before serving. I hope y’all enjoy this recipe as much as we do! Guest Post: Quote Printable from Blissful Roots

Hi! My name is Brooke Duncan. You can usually find me over at Blissful Roots, but today I’m thrilled to be here at Alderberry Hill. I love visiting Sarah, and taking in all her creativity!

A little bit about me. I’m married to the kindest person I know- my husband Christian of 12 years. We have three young boys (six-year-old twins and a three-year-old) who keep us hopping, and ever so happy. I’m a former first grade teacher, crafter, holiday fanatic, runner, nature lover, and cookbook reader (I read them like novels).

On with my post. I was at my neighbor’s house last year, and this quote was sitting right in the middle of her coffee table in her living room. It was one of the first things I noticed in her home. I loved it so much that I pulled out the little notebook I keep in my purse and wrote it down right then and there.

As I thought about this quote, the first thing that popped into my head was my three boys. They are good boys, but boys will be boys. They could probably spend 90% of their days in time out if I focused on every little thing they did wrong. Some days are like that at our house, and I’m not saying I’m perfect at this, but I’ve learned (through teaching, and now parenting) that the more you focus on the positive, the more you see it. My boys may do a thousand wonderful things in a day, but if I’m focused on all the naughty things they do, I miss the good things. This can be applied to any relationship or situation in our lives. If we focus on the negative, that’s what we’ll see. If we choose to seek out the positive, we’ll be pleasantly surprised with all the good we find. There is so much good out there, we just need to turn our focus towards it.

Here’s the darker version of the printable. Print them out and see which one works best for where you want to put it.

I printed out my quote, (I made it small, 60% of the original size) mounted it on a piece of scrapbook paper, and then clipped it to a chicken wire memory board I have. You could also frame it, put it on a magnet board, put in on your bathroom mirror- wherever you fancy. I like putting quotes like this where I can see them often. The more I see them, the more chances I have of being reminded about what I need to be focused on.

It was a beautiful day here and I spent most of it outside, right now as I type my fantastic daughter is painting me toe nails – ahhh, so relaxing.

As you’ve probably noticed I’ve had a couple of wonderful guest post on my blog and there are more to come for the remainder of May month.

It’s time for a little break for me as things have become a bit hectic around the house and “real life” always comes first – I am enjoying taking things day by day and not worrying about what I am going to post next and when will I get a chance to get a post together.

Happy Saturday Everyone…and a big thanks to Emily for Guest Posting with me!

Hi Alderberry Hill readers… I’ve got a super-fab project for you today. A Golf Ball Family Tree for all those men in your life who love golf. .

I’m so excited that Sarah gave me the opportunity to be here today. I blog over at Nap-Time Creations, where I record what I accomplish in the afternoon while my little ones are asleep. I’d love for you to pop over to my profile page and learn a little more about my life as a mom (and foster mom), wife and American girl living in Hong Kong. Alrighty, now that we are introduced, let’s dive into the project.

We made this project for my Father-in-Law for Christmas and I must give the idea credit to my husband! Together we worked together to make his vision a reality.

When my husband pitched this idea I wasn’t sure we could make it happen. My initial search for golf balls personalized with photos only came up with orders of a dozen… and I didn’t want a dozen of each person! a couple of days later I found this site where you can order just one. So, we found a photo of each family member and sent them off to the company to have the balls printed. Back home we got a piece of 1/2 inch plywood, fabric, felt, and some plain wood golf tees. {our wood was about 2′ x 2′}

If you had a nice piece of wood, you could just paint it, but ours was rough, so we covered it with fabric.

1. draw out (on paper) your tree with enough room for all your family members.

2. cut out the tree trunk from felt and lay on the wood.

3. with a sharp object poke holes where the golf tees will go. Mark through the felt tree onto the wood in each hole. {just realized that the top two photos here already have the holes drilled. Bottom two show holes cut in felt}

After we had marked the holes, my husband drilled them all {and only put two holes in the chair below!} while I made the leaves and did the stitching on the tree.

After the drilling, we glued on the green fabric, then the felt trunk and leaves. We ended up cutting off the tip of each tee becuase they were a little long. You will have to measure to see if you need to trim yours. {this lovely workshop is at my in-laws…}

The tees fit in the hole very tightly so we didn’t use any glue.

It was SO fun to watch my Father-in-Law open this gift. {who in your life would love this??}

Yep… my face is on a golf ball {no hitting!!}

We were super excited with the final result… I think better than either of us thought.

Guest Post: Keepsake Suitcase from Kaminskis Creations

Good morning everyone, here’s the kick off of the guest post’s I’ve lined up for the rest of the month of May here at Alderberry Hill. I hope you enjoy the wonderful projects these fantastic bloggers are sharing with you this month…stay tuned, there`s so much more to come!

This week I’m honoured to be guest posting with Alderberry Hill. A little about myself….My name is Erin Kaminski. I live in Ft. Worth Texas. I’m married to my best friend, Russell. I’m a mother of a beautiful almost 5 year old girl. I’ve been an elementary art teacher for almost 15 years. I have a blog called Kaminski’s Creations. I also have an Etsy shop which has home decor items, journals, items for baby etc. I love paper crafting, sewing, photography, painting and repurposing. This tutorial combines all of my loves. I’m thrilled to share my tutorial on how to create a Keepsake Suitcase for your little one. You know…to store all those keepsake odds and ends that you save and have no idea where to put them.

I had an old suitcase laying around (given to me by my friend Dina) and finally knew what I wanted to do with it. I decided to turn it into a keepsake box for Sophia (my 4 year old daughter) for her to keep when she leaves home (for college or to go out on her own).

Here’s what it looked like before. It was in pretty good condition but I wanted to jazz it up.

Even the insides were in good shape but it just didn’t look like Sophia.

I was digging through my scrapbook paper stash and came across this collection by Fancy Pants called Be You. Perfect! I love all the quotes on the pages.

I spray painted the suitcase black. Cut the paper into strips. I laid out the design first. Then I used modge podge to adhere the paper to the suit case.

One of the latches was broken, so I strung some ribbon through and attached these embellishments.

Now for the insides. I decided to make a pocket for the part that flips back and forth. I basically cut out 2 rectangles one inch bigger than the flap itself. I sewed it up the sides (with right sides together). Then I slid it on the flap (I ironed on Velcro before I sewed the pieces together).

Then I used some Stitch Witchery (I think that’s what it’s called) on the bottom. If you’ve never used it, all you do is cut a strip of it off. Lay it on the place you want “sewn” together. Use an iron to heat it and it “sews” it together for you.

Now for the compartments….I measured the walls of the suitcase and added 1 1/2 inches to the top (so I can fold down the top later for a finished edge). On the ends, I just added an inch the the overall measurement. Sew the strips together.

Then pin and sew the sides to a piece of fabric that you’ve added a an inch to on both sides (a 1/2 inch seam allowance).

Then iron and fold the top over all the way around to get a finished edge.

Cut strips of the Stitch Witchery and lay them on the wall of the suitcase and iron on the fabric.

Do that for all 4 sides (I had a little trouble getting my iron into some of the spots so I just used some fabric glue.

I added some ribbon using fabric glue to hide the edge of the suitcase fabric.

Now….what to put into the suitcase…..

I decided to make envelopes out of black scrapbook paper. I cut 18 pieces of 8 x 12 paper (1 for each year of her life at home. Then within each envelope I’ll put my favourite pics of her and the family in each one).

Tri-folded each one. I used my corner rounder to round the top flat corners.

I used my sewing machine to sew zig-zags up both sides. I thought about using washi tape but I didn’t have the right width and color for this project.

I stuck some Velcro to the top of each envelope.

Then I embellished each envelope and labeled it with the year.

Here’s the pics from pre-birth to her 1st birthday. They will go in envelope 1.

I tied some pink ribbon around the bundle to keep them all together.

I made another envelope using this fun Dr. Seuss paper. but I only had one piece and I needed to make a big envelope. So I used a piece of lime green paper and sewed them together.

Inside of this envelope I will be putting the letters to Sophia that I write to her each year on her birthday (I’ll let her read them when she turns 18).

I’ll also be putting her birthday books inside the suitcase. Each year at her birthday parties, I have all the guests sign a book (they can write a message if they want or just their name). The book always corresponds to her birthday party theme. This Ladybug Girl book is from her 1st birthday party where the theme was The Backyardigans.

I like to add a photo from the party at the front of the book.

These are the other books we have so far.

These are the cards from showers and shower game guesses that I kept and never really knew what to do with. I’m adding this to the swinging flap in the middle suitcase.

Sophia is very excited about this project!

Make the Scene Monday

time again!

What a beautiful day we had here today. It was about 22 degrees Celsius which is around 71 degrees Fahrenheit – that’s extremely good in my neck of the woods this time of year. We spent the entire day outside!

I’m so sorry for the lack of posts this past week, it’s been a whirlwind here since we’ve added a furry family member to the mix. Whatever free time I did have is not free anymore.

I am hoping to get back into the groove of things soon though, even half way!

I will be accepting guests posts for dates between May 10th

& May 30th, a yummy recipe or fantastic DIY Project or

Crafts will be wonderful. I do require your post to be
